Obligation to document fall protection systems

Duty of documentation and fall protection -
An indispensable link

In recent years, the documentation requirements for the installation and maintenance of fall protection systems have increased significantly and are also prescribed by the DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance).
The documentation requires precise information about the respective object, the installation company, the responsible specialist installer, the exact product designation and the fasteners used. Equally important is photographic documentation and a site plan showing the exact position of the numbered anchor points. This means that each anchor point can be clearly identified even years later.

The documentation plays an important role as it ensures that the installation has been carried out correctly.
In the DGUV Information 201-056 “Planning principles for anchorage devices on roofs” emphasizes that the installation documentation provides the client with proof that the installation was carried out professionally.

An essential part of the installation documentation is the roof access plan, which must be included with the documentation. This places the responsibility for the documentation in the hands of the fitter, even if the client does not expressly request the documentation. Subsequent documentation is not possible and cannot replace the regular documentation obligation. Documentation is therefore crucial for the long-term functionality of the installed fall protection system.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the documentation obligation

Who is allowed to document?

According to the DGUV’s prevention guideline “Carrying out expert inspections”, competent assembly personnel are those who are “qualified to prepare assembly documentation”. The preparation of documentation is also part of further training to become a competent person for personal fall protection equipment(PPE) .

How often does fall protection have to be checked?

Fall protection should be inspected at least once a year, including anchor points, ropes, harnesses and lanyards. Employees in atypical roofing professions must also be trained annually in the use of fall protection in order to be allowed to use the safety systems on roof surfaces properly.
