If repairs, maintenance or assembly work needs to be carried out at work locations to which there is no direct route inside the building, a fixed ladder with an arrester system for fall protection is recommended. A fixed ladder and a vertical rail system, to which the personal fall protection equipment (PPE) is attached, enable safe access for users. Fixed ladders with fall arresters are used, for example, on industrial buildings, masts, chimneys or wind turbines. The combination of a climbing protection slider and the rail as a fixed guide enables the user to climb the entire ladder safely, especially if a small moment of carelessness or weather conditions make the ascent dangerous.

The arrester as fall protection prevents dangerous accidents when accessing roof surfaces thanks to the high-quality arrester system with fixed guide. The climbing protection system can be used in several ways:

• The climbing protection system can be clamped to the center of an existing fixed ladder.
• Alternatively, the system can also be clamped to the side of the ladder rail.

Requirements for installation and use of the arrester system

The climbing protection reliably prevents falls when climbing a ladder. During installation, the maximum spacing of 1.75 m between the rail brackets must be observed. The climbing protection system is attached with three brackets per system and one bracket per rail section. In addition, entry and exit points and interruptions in the rail must be secured with end stops, for example with a type 2 end piece. This prevents incorrect insertion of the accompanying fall arrester.

A fall arrester with a fixed guide may only be used to attach PPE against falls from a height, consisting of a safety harness in accordance with DIN EN 631 and a carabiner in accordance with DIN EN 362 belonging to the fall arrester. When planning the use and installation of the fall arrester, care should be taken in advance to ensure that accident regulations and other rules to prevent accidents are taken into account. State regulations and the accident prevention regulations of the employers’ liability insurance association include, among others

Correct attachment and safe use of the fall arrest system on the fixed ladder is only guaranteed if the relevant regulations are observed. In addition, before using the fixed ladder, an inspection must be carried out to ensure that the fall arrester is in perfect condition and that the equipment parts are compatible.
